Lâ11 agosto si è conclusa lâultima edizione delle Olimpiadi del 2024. Mentre tutti conosciamo la bellissima storia della nascita di questo incredibile evento, non molti sanno che la fondazione dei âGiochi Olimpiciâ risale al 1896 in Grecia, fortemente voluta da un aristocratico francese: Pierre de Coubertin. Lâidea era quella di promuovere la pace e la comprensione internazionale attraverso lo sport.
Questa prima edizione si svolse per nove giorni e vi parteciparono 12 nazioni (inclusa lâItalia) e ben 280 atleti, rigorosamente tutti uomini. Un fatto interessante è che i giochi olimpici furono ospitati ad Atene nel 1906, per poi ritornarci solo nel 2004, 108 anni dopo! Anche in quella prima edizione, gli Stati Uniti vinsero il maggior numero di medaglie, seguiti dalla Grecia. Originariamente, le gare erano riservate esclusivamente ai dilettanti, infatti ci fu una controversia sulla prima medaglia dâoro dellâitaliano Carlo Airoldi, un maratoneta che però non fu ammesso a gareggiare perchĂŠ aveva accettato premi in denaro in gare precedenti, questa è con dispiacere una tradizione ormai superata.
Nel 1904, alle Olimpiadi di St. Louis, vennero introdotte le medaglie dâoro, dâargento e di bronzo per i primi tre classificati, una tradizione che continua ancora oggi.Â
Le Olimpiadi Invernali furono invece introdotte nel 1924 a Chamonix, in Francia, aggiungendo cosĂŹ nuove discipline come lo sci e il pattinaggio su ghiaccio al panorama olimpico.
Le donne furono ammesse a competere per la prima volta alle Olimpiadi del 1900 a Parigi. A gareggiare furono 22 atlete e gareggiarono in diverse discipline, tra cui tennis, vela, croquet, equitazione e golf. HĂŠlène de Pourtalès, dalla Svizzera, fu la prima donna a vincere una medaglia dâoro, segnando un importante passo avanti nella paritĂ di genere nello sport.Â
Ad oggi, Michael Phelps è lâatleta piĂš decorato nella storia delle Olimpiadi, con un totale di 28 medaglie, di cui 23 dâoro.
Le Olimpiadi sono state cancellate solo tre volte nella storia moderna a causa delle guerre mondiali: nel 1916, 1940 e 1944.Â
I cinque cerchi olimpici, disegnati da Pierre de Coubertin, rappresentano lâunione dei cinque continenti e lâincontro degli atleti di tutto il mondo. I colori dei cerchi (blu, giallo, nero, verde, rosso) e il bianco dello sfondo comprendono tutti i colori delle bandiere nazionali del mondo allâepoca della loro creazione.
La tradizione di accendere la fiamma olimpica risale alle antiche Olimpiadi. La fiamma moderna viene accesa a Olimpia, in Grecia, e poi portata nella cittĂ ospitante tramite una staffetta di tedofori, simboleggiando la continuitĂ e lo spirito dei giochi.
In tempi antichi, i vincitori delle Olimpiadi ricevevano una corona dâulivo, mentre nei primi Giochi Olimpici moderni, alcuni vincitori ricevevano premi in denaro, coppe e persino bestiame.
