Un cappuccino per favore

Ciao amici lettori! 

Sono emozionata come sempre per il mio prossimo rientro nella mia amata madre-patria. Uno dei momenti più attesi per me è la colazione all’Aeroporto di Fiumicino, una tradizione che non posso proprio saltare. 

Ovviamente non mi accontento di un cappuccino, la mia seconda tappa obbligatoria, per un secondo cappuccino con il cornetto, è sulla strada che dal mare mi porta a casa. Un viaggio di sapori prima ancora di varcare la soglia di casa!

Mi viene da sorridere pensando alle differenze culinarie tra l’Italia e gli Stati Uniti. Mentre negli States una colazione tradizionale include uova, pancetta e toast, in Italia siamo più propensi a gustare il pasto principale a pranzo o a cena. E questa differenza è in gran parte dovuta agli orari. In Italia, i pasti sono un momento sociale e vengono presi con calma, mentre negli States gli orari dei pasti sono più flessibili. Dopo la colazione il pranzo è di solito leggero e veloce, mentre si cena piuttosto presto, diciamo verso le 18. Mentre gli orari per mangiare sono rigidi in Italia, negli Stati Uniti si può mangiare in un ristorante in qualsiasi orario.

Ma parliamo delle porzioni! Negli Stati Uniti, tutto deve essere grande e abbondante, specialmente nei ristoranti. Chiedi un espresso e ti portano una tazzina che sembra quasi il doppio della tazzina italiana! Un’esperienza che fa sorridere chi è abituato alle delicatezze italiane.

E che dire del servizio a tavolo? Nei ristoranti americani, è comune che il cameriere porti il conto prima ancora che tu lo chieda o finisca il pasto. Una differenza sostanziale rispetto all’Italia, dove il cameriere aspetta la tua richiesta. E poi c’è la mancia, il famoso “tip”. In Italia è ben accetta, ma negli Stati Uniti è praticamente obbligatoria, soprattutto se il servizio è stato buono. Non si tratta solo dei ristoranti, ma si dà la mancia al taxi, all’inserviente in hotel, alla parrucchiera, all’estetista e così via.

Queste sono solo le prime differenze culturali che mi vengono in mente, soprattutto quando si tratta di cibo. Ma ora, mentre scrivo, comincio a sognare il mio prossimo delizioso cappuccino italiano, che prometto solennemente di consumare solo a colazione. Un piccolo lusso che rende il mio ritorno a casa ancora più dolce. 😊

I am excited, as always, for my upcoming return to my beloved homeland: Italy! One of my most anticipated moments is breakfast at Fiumicino Airport, a tradition I just can’t skip.

Of course, I don’t settle for just a cappuccino; my second mandatory stop is for another cappuccino, this time accompanied by a cornetto, on the road that takes me from the sea to home. A journey of flavors even before crossing the threshold of my house!

I can’t help but smile thinking about the culinary differences between Italy and the United States. While in the States, a traditional breakfast includes eggs, bacon, and toast, in Italy, we are more inclined to enjoy the main meal at lunch or dinner. This difference is primarily due to schedules. In Italy, meals are a social moment taken leisurely, whereas in the States, mealtimes are more flexible. After breakfast, lunch is usually light and quick, while dinner is served relatively early, let’s say around 6 PM. While mealtimes are strict in Italy, in the United States, you can dine in a restaurant at any hour.

But let’s talk about portions! In the United States, everything must be large and abundant, especially in restaurants. Order an espresso, and they bring you a cup that looks almost double the size of an Italian espresso cup! An experience that brings a smile to those accustomed to Italian delicacies.

And what about table service? In American restaurants, it’s common for the waiter to bring the bill before you even ask or finish your meal. A substantial difference compared to Italy, where the waiter waits for your request. And then there’s the tip, the famous “tip.” In Italy, it’s welcome but not required, while in the United States, it’s practically obligatory, especially if the service has been good. It’s not limited to restaurants; tips are given to taxi drivers, hotel attendants, hairdressers, beauticians, and so on.

These are just the first cultural differences that come to mind, especially when it comes to food. But now, as I write, I begin to dream of my next delightful Italian cappuccino, which I solemnly promise to consume only at breakfast. A small luxury that makes my return home even sweeter. 😊

Una tradizione che forse è tra le più antiche in Italia è la nostra amatissima Befana.

Ma perchè questa tradizione?

Sappiamo che è una tradizione natalizia molto antica e radicata nella cultura popolare. La sua storia risale al Medioevo, quindi molto prima di Babbo Natale, quando la figura della Befana era conosciuta come una strega che portava doni ai bambini buoni e carbone ai bambini cattivi. La Befana è una figura allegorica che rappresenta la fine dell’anno e l’inizio di un nuovo ciclo. La sua festa è celebrata il 6 Gennaio, giorno dell’Epifania, quando la tradizione vuole che la Befana porti doni ai bambini, lasciandoli nelle calze appese vicino al camino.

La Befana è una figura amata dai bambini, ma la sua storia ha anche un lato triste. Si dice che la Befana fosse una madre che, in attesa del ritorno del figlio, si dedicava a fare le pulizie e a preparare deliziosi dolci. Purtroppo, il figlio non tornò mai e la sua casa rimase vuota. La Befana, perciò, inizia a vagare per le strade, distribuendo doni ai bambini, nella speranza di ritrovare il suo caro figlio.

Oggi, la Befana è una festa popolare in Italia, celebrata con eventi, spettacoli e processioni. Il suo significato è profondo e simbolico, e rappresenta la ricerca dell’amore e della speranza, anche in momenti difficili. La Befana è una figura che unisce le famiglie e che porta gioia e allegria in un periodo speciale dell’anno, ed è una festa tutta italiana.

Oggi voglio condurvi in un viaggio in luogo che lascia tutti incanti. Attraverso le stradine illuminate e i segreti notturni di Roma, con uno sguardo speciale rivolto verso uno dei luoghi più iconici della Città Eterna vi voglio far vedere: la Basilica di San Pietro. Immaginatevi di camminare lungo le rive del Tevere, con il fresco della notte che accarezza il vostro viso e l’antica storia della città che vi circonda.

Il cuore di questa cartolina notturna è, senza dubbio, la maestosa Basilica di San Pietro. Quando il sole si ritira dietro l’orizzonte e le stelle iniziano a brillare nel cielo, la città si trasforma in un’atmosfera magica. La cupola di San Pietro come guardiana silenziosa, si staglia imponente contro il buio.

Il riverbero delle luci crea giochi di ombre sulle facciate barocche, donano un’aura di mistero e solennità. Gli obelischi, testimonianze di epoche lontane, sembrano custodire i segreti di Roma, mentre le fontane contribuiscono a creare un’atmosfera rilassante e suggestiva.

Imagine walking along the banks of the Tiber, with the cool night air caressing your face and the ancient history of the city surrounding you.

The heart of this nocturnal postcard is undoubtedly the majestic St. Peter’s Basilica. When the sun retreats behind the horizon and the stars begin to shine in the sky, the city transforms into a magical atmosphere. The dome of St. Peter’s, like a silent guardian, stands imposingly against the darkness.
